✨A Shadow of the Past✨

It had been a few months since Elisabeth and Elijah had played a proper LotR LCG scenario, let alone begin a campaign of it! We were confident we could do this, that was until the game reminded us of just how brutal it can be.

We stepped outside our door at Bag End and headed towards the Prancing Pony. It was quite a ways away, forcing us to pass through forests along the way. In the forest however we were instantly met with a Black Rider, hunting us.

In this particular quest, there are "Hide Tests" where you must exhaust any amount of heroes, using their willpower stat against the threat count of some discarded encounter cards. If your willpower is higher you succeed in hiding from the Nazgul. If you fail, they find you and immediately attack.

This happened to us on turn one. Not only one Black Rider, but two attacked us. Killing off the poor hobbits. And seriously crippling Elizabeth's heroes. In pure thematic fashion this game always reminds me why I love it so much. The encounter deck is never kind to you, and you really do feel as though you are overcoming all odds!

After three attempts at the scenario, we finally had our flow back. We were more cautious about when to rush forward. Keeping our ally count small as not to draw attention. It got to a point where Aragorn and Legolas were taking care of the Nazgul that I would draw in and distract.

The locations in the scenario began to build up near the end as we stressed about clearing the staging area so we could hop on the Bucklebury Ferry! It was a tense beginning to our journey, and the path ahead leads to the Old Forest. With its angry trees and slithering vines. We've left the safety of home. There's no going back now until it is finished.
