Viking commerce is the aim of the game here. Full your storehouses to the brim with gold, food, and livestock while managing your fleet of Viking warriors. This is Lofoten.
~~~
Lofoten was an important place for Vikings (according to what I learned from tidbits of info the game offered) and it was a place where resources abound. In this game your store house are essentially a tug of war over 4 different spots. Each storehouse can only house one type of good. Whomever has more by the end of the game will be able to score that objective.
~~~
You get things to these storehouses through this wheel mechanism (which is your felt of Vikings) On your turn you may discard either the left card in your hand, to move/rotate spaces left or from the right card, moving/rotating right. On the way you may pick up resources that will then be delivered once they are facing you at the bottom of the wheel.
~~~
The card play of loading a card or discarding it to move is a fun efficiency puzzle while anticipating what your opponent may be trying to grab. The tug of war of the storehouse adds a nice amount of tension without being overwhelming.
~~~
I suggest jumping right into the advanced way of play as it adds more interesting objectives and also racing to get the ability of a Jarl is rather nice. Lofoten for us hits that sweet spot of perfect length of play and not too brain burning. It has a wide table space somewhat but should be able to fit on most coffee shop tables.
~~~
All in all we found Lofoten charming and different. It's nice to have a duel game that isn't a redesign of a big name game and finds its own little path to tread. It's warm artwork and unique set-up lends itself to a cozy time spent at your table.
