There's something about a solo game that is warm and cozy. One that sets up in seconds, but lasts just long enough to satisfy that gaming itch. For Northwood! may just be your game.
In this solo game you'll be trying to peacefully bring together the Northwood by way of conversations with the 8 rulers (for that game). You do this by drawing from a deck of cards and either matching the suit of a higher number if you can or playing the trump suit depending on which ruler you are having a conversation with.
You'll start with 4 allies that have abilities in their cards that will help you to win a specified number of tricks. Each ruler is sitting on a number. You need to win exactly that many to convince them to a peace treaty. Win 0 and 7 tricks can be quite the tough puzzle sometimes.
When you do convince a ruler, you'll have the opportunity to use their power during the game (one time). This can be rather helpful! Convince all 8 you win! (You can technically win with less, but go for the gold!)
Trick-taking, in my eyes at least, is about finding the tempo with it's ruleset. Knowing when to lose a trick, when to win. In this case, when to use a power and when not to. This is a wonderfully crafted game. A superb solo game. Even if trick taking isn't your thing, give it a try. There's something special here that brings the warmth of a soft autumn afternoon to the comfort of your table.
