Every once in a while, my lovely wife and I come across a game that we end up playing a lot. Not because it's so deep, or complex, or even extremely thematic. Rather, it's simple nature, accessibility, and small footprint. Enter Donuts.
This was a game I passed on a few times. Then one day I learned how to play on BGA. Took maybe 3 minutes to play the game. I was hooked. I started showing it to everyone. "It'll take 3 minutes!" Then they'd be hooked. We'd play multiple rounds, thinking more and more turns ahead. It gets the mind going. My wife and I even bring it to small diners and play before our breakfast comes. It's wonderful.
So how do you play? Simple: place a donut. On the space you place your donut will be a line indicating which row your opponent can place their donut. If you ever can't place a donut because the row is full you can place it anywhere. This goes back and forth until someone gets 5 in a row or the board is filled and the person with the biggest group of clustered donuts wins.
But there is one other thing: If ever you have two donuts of the same type with an empty space in between, and your opponent is able to put a donut there, the adjacent donuts become their type.
The board is split into four pieces so there is some variable set up (double sided), the donuts are wooden which is actually a nice touch. It's just a quaint little game. It's not flashy or bloated with rules. It's "sweet". 🍩
So even after 44 plays last month (I told you it was a lot 😆) we find this one that's easy to grab and go. Coffee, donuts, and smiles with loved ones. Life is good.
