Early on in my board gaming days (2015) I played a little game called Onirim. Drawn to the art style and seeing that it was a solo game, I was very intrigued. Honestly, this was my first solo game in my collection. Needless to say, I loved it. It felt fresh and different. Then I found out it was part of a series...woah.
Fast forward to now, it had been quite some time since I played an Oniverse game. Enter stage right: Cyberion.
I kept seeing it talked about, saw design diaries on it, and it kept catching my eye. Finally, I gave in to the buzz and bought a copy which in turn brought about a resurgence for the Oniverse for me. It felt like that first time playing Onirim. It has that charm about it.
In Cyberion you are using robots helping to fix machines in the Oniverse factories before the evil Cogs destroy them. However, in this game you must upgrade your robots to be able to use their abilities to fix the tougher machines.
The upgraded system is what makes this game so great. The decision of which ones to upgrade each game is a delightful puzzle and so satisfying when you get it just right. Not only that, but you have three areas you are potentially drawing cards from. Essentially you have 3 hands of cards.
There are also plenty of expansions to mix and match that come with the game to make it your desired difficulty/preference in complexity. It's absolutely a treat.
I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the art. @elis.illustration truly brings the Oniverse to life with each and every game. This one in particular is extremely vibrant, bouncy, and playful. The quirky robots doing different things will bring a smile to your face. The art is in the DNA of these games and it deserves to be recognized!
Cyberion is a wonderful entry and would be a welcome edition to any solo gamer's collection.
